From Hope for Tomorrow

In March when we had our Hope for Literacy Conference, we were joined by a few high school seniors who will be preschool teachers next year. Their teachers and the director of the program have been attending our conference for a few years. We were invited to visit the high school where approximately 400 students are being trained to be preschool teachers. While there we learned that the director is trying to implement some of the practices that we are teaching at our conference. In fact, she had used the book Where the Wild Things Are to teach early literacy practices and the students shared their handmade story books with us. It was a rewarding moment and further convinced us that if we want to improve early childhood practices in Guatemala that we need to be working with these students before they become teachers. The Director suggested that a conference for the students would be very much appreciated! So, Mary Louise and I are heading to Guatemala later this week and early next week we will host a conference for 150 student teachers! What is also exciting is that the event will take place at our school AND our Principal and teachers will be assisting with the training!
